I've been living in Slovakia since 2009, when I left my native town of Udine, in the north-eastern Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, to start a new life here. 
 
It was just work that brought me to the country in the first place. During my studies, I participated in an exchange in Krakow, Poland, where I met my wife. Going back home, I crossed Slovakia, passing through Orava and spending a few days in Nitra. It felt like a place I could spend some time in, so after graduation I moved to Bratislava. 
 
Coming from a small Italian region enclosed by the mountains from the north and the sea from the south, I was delighted to live in a multicultural environment.
 
I love living in Slovakia. Half of my family is now Slovak, my kids are European and western Slovakia is a good starting point to move around Europe quite easily. 
 
But my beginnings in the country were not easy. I often had to rely on my wife's support and guidance at and it is still kind of hard for me to conduct a long conversation in Slovak. And I’ve been wondering how it was for people like me - when they first came to Slovakia, how it changed their lives, and if they have some useful hints and tips to share.
